General Information
The University
The University is a centre of excellence for teaching and research. It is situated on three campuses located approximately 2 and 14 km from each other. Convenient and rapid communication exists between the three campuses. Students in the School of Biosciences study both at Sutton Bonington Campus, a rural environment of some 500 acres and the University Park Campus which is situated on a 330 acre landscaped campus set in an area of woodland parks and playing fields, 4.5 km from the centre of the prosperous and historic city of Nottingham. The University College was established in 1881, and the University received its Charter in 1948. It now registers over 13,000 students on its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the six Faculties of Arts, Law and Social Sciences, Education, Engineering, Science, and Medicine and Health Sciences.
Sutton Bonington Campus
Sutton Bonington Campus is one of the leading centres in the UK in research and teaching. The campus has a population of about 400 undergraduates, 200 postgraduates and 50 academic staff. The campus is self-contained with excellent accommodation, shops, dining and sports and recreational facilities and library making it a friendly, sociable place assuring everyone of a warm welcome.

At Sutton Bonington relationships between undergraduates, postgraduates and staff are closer than would be possible on a larger campus and all derive benefit from this. Living in a rural setting, with easy access to nearby towns and cities, is also considered by many to be a great bonus. Social activities are organised by the Postgraduate Association (PGA) in response to the specific interests of current members.
The International Students Society at Sutton Bonington includes members from 33 nations and liases with the PGA to arrange events of particular relevance to international members, as well as providing an opportunity for informal gatherings and cultural experiences.
The Sports Centre provides recently upgraded facilities including an all-weather pitch and, for indoor sports, five-a-side Football, indoor Cricket and Hockey, Badminton, Volleyball, Tennis, Squash and Basketball. The newly extended Pavilion houses a state-of-the-art Fitness Suite. The many clubs and sporting societies include Rugby, Football, Cricket, Hockey, Badminton, Riding, Tennis, Squash, Netball, Billiards and Snooker, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Karate, Caving, Mountaineering, Rifle Shooting, Fell Walking and the Motor Club.
The City of Nottingham is a major business and cultural centre serving the whole of the East Midlands and is situated in the heart of England, within easy travelling distance of London and the Peak District National Park. There are two fine theatres, both of which offer students special rates, and the Royal Concert Hall is regarded as one of Europe's most modern concert halls, making the city a leading venue for classical, rock and pop music. Nottingham is also a leading sporting city with two Football league clubs (Nottingham Forest and Notts County), a test match Cricket ground (Trent Bridge), the National Ice Centre and the site of the National Water Sports Centre. The Peak District National Park is within easy travelling distance and, to the north of Nottingham, a few tracts remain of Sherwood Forest, legendary home of Robin Hood.
Transport
Transport links between Nottingham and other parts of Britain are excellent. There is an hourly train service to London with a journey time of less than two hours. The nearby M1 motorway also provides good road links to all parts of the country. The East Midlands International Airport, situated about 8 km from Sutton Bonington, is linked with London Heathrow and London Gatwick by bus, and offers numerous regional routes within the UK and destinations throughout mainland Europe.
Welfare
The University provides excellent recreational, social and welfare facilities. There is a Health Centre with in-patient facilities, student counsellors, a Careers Advisory Service, orientation and reorientation programmes. There is a very active Students Union and an International Students Bureau, international link schemes, including English Language tuition as required and an ecumenical Chaplaincy, including a Muslim Advisor and Prayer Room.

The additional cost of maintenance is the responsibility of the student or the sponsoring agency. As a general guide, £7,500 is sufficient to cover the cost of accommodation and maintenance for the duration of the course. Students applying for the course must take this into account when approaching potential sponsors.'
