Dr. Harv's Gigantic Speakers

Acrylic and Vinyl Emulsion, 1999-2001

My uncle, Anthony's speakers are the best civilian speakers in the known world. Unfortunately they looked like big ol' white washing machines. So I painted them in return for Hi-Fi separates. Now they look like a big ol' face, I hope that it's an improvement.

I painted the inner sides of the tweeters. These started with me worrying about the wastefulness of the amount of paint I had on my hands while painting the woofers, so I made hand prints. My cousin Pete wanted lizards in there somewhere, so I made hand-headed lizards. Initially I just used my fingers to make blobs. Finger-painting is fun, but it looked rubbish, so I painted on feet (modelled on Pete's gecko's feet) and outlines the blobs in white. I then decided to join all the dismembered parts together with black sticks. There you go. That's what this is.

The Fronts of the Woofers if pushed together make a face. They're loosely based on those circular Ghanaian masks (see Camden Market). The colours are the colours of the room in which this monster lives. As well as the traditional elements I've also tried to include modern elements and shapes, 'cos it is a hi-fi, you know.

Here's me paining them, and Harv standing proudly between some other large speakers of his!
